BUNDABERG, QLD — A new business award honouring the legacy of beloved Bundaberg businesswoman Sonja Pressler-McHugh has been launched, celebrating her lasting impact on the local community and entrepreneurial spirit.

The Bundaberg Regional Council, in partnership with McHugh Steel and the Bundaberg Chamber of Commerce, has created the award to inspire the next generation of innovators and business leaders.

Sonja, remembered as a trailblazing CEO of McHugh Steel, was not only a powerhouse in the business world but also known for her deep compassion and community spirit. Her influence continues to be felt by those who knew her and through the strong foundations she helped build in the local business landscape.

“This is a really great thing that we are so proud of – a real testament to Sonja Pressler-McHugh and what she developed within our community for entrepreneurship and innovation, and just her spirit overall,” said a spokesperson from McHugh Steel. “Her legacy lives on in everything we do here.”

The award will be presented to a standout woman in business in the Bundaberg region, someone who mirrors Sonja’s values by making a meaningful contribution to the community and demonstrating a commitment to growth and innovation. The recipient will also receive $500 to support their business journey.

The award will form part of the Bundaberg Business Excellence Awards, and nominations are now open.
